Dog Urinalysis and Fecal Exam Back

Urinal Analysis

Urine testing is routinely performed to screen for specific health issues in your dog. Urine testing looks at several different parameters. These include urine concentration, findings in urine sediment, and urine strip results (looking for presence of things like blood, glucose, ketones, bilirubin, etc.)

Common reasons the veterinarian may recommend urine testing include:

  • Suspected urinary tract infection
  • Suspected urinary crystals or bladder stones
  • Assess kidney health and function
  • Diabetic diagnosis and monitoring

Collection methods of urine include free catch, bladder expression, urinary catheterization and cystocentesis. Depending on the reason for urinalysis, the veterinarian may prefer one method over another.

Fecal Testing

Fecal testing is routinely performed to screen for intestinal parasites in your dog. We recommend routine fecal testing in new puppies, hunting dogs, dogs that eat carcasses, and dogs that tend to eat wildlife feces. If your pet has diarrhea or you have concerns with stool quality, the veterinarian may also recommend fecal testing. Upon results, specific deworming medications can be prescribed, and husbandry can be recommended.

Please discuss fecal testing and deworming with one of our veterinarians at any of your pets’ examinations!
